Marionberry Swirl
Sweet-cream base rippled with marionberry preserves we cook down from Boones Ferry Farm fruit. Our number-one since 2015.
Real Oregon cream, fruit from the farmers we know by name, and recipes our family has been perfecting on Birch Lane since 2012.
We started with a secondhand churn and a hunch that Bend deserved ice cream made the old-fashioned way. Here's how the years scooped out.
Maren & Cole Hartley open a 600-sq-ft storefront on Birch Lane with five flavors and a chalkboard menu. Vanilla Bean sells out by 2 p.m. on opening Saturday.
We partner with three Central Oregon farms for marionberries, lavender, and raw honey — kicking off our rotating small-batch board that still changes every week.
Readers of the Bend Bulletin vote Birch Lane "Best Ice Cream" — the first of six years running. We add a sidewalk patio and a lot more napkins.
After a year of testing, our house-made oat base launches so every neighbor gets a scoop. Today a third of our board is dairy-free and you genuinely can't tell.
Our hand-packed pints land in twelve local grocers from Bend to Sisters — still churned in the same shop, still by the same family.
Our flavor board changes with the season and whatever's ripe at the market. Here's what's churning right now.

Slow-browned butter folded with raw wildflower honey from a Tumalo apiary. Tastes like a campfire morning in a cone.
Real garden mint steeped into our oat cream, shot through with shards of dark chocolate. No green dye, ever.
Cold brew from Bend's Backporch Coffee churned into a malted cream with a chocolate-covered espresso bean crunch.
Madagascar bourbon vanilla, egg yolks, and nothing else. The recipe that sold out on day one and never left the board.
Culinary lavender and roasted Italian plums on our oat base — our most-requested limited batch, back for late summer.
“What's churning today?” Call ahead at (541) 555-0142 — the board can change by the afternoon.
Birch Lane has always been a family affair. Maren writes the recipes, Cole runs the churn before sunrise, and their daughter June names the limited batches (Lavender Plum was hers). We don't have a factory or a corporate flavor lab — just a small shop, good ingredients, and the time it takes to do it right.
“We'd rather sell out by closing than make a flavor we wouldn't hand to our own kid.”
— Maren & Cole Hartley, owners
“The marionberry swirl ruined every other ice cream for me. We stop at Birch Lane every single time we drive through Bend. Worth the detour.”
“My daughter is dairy-free and cried happy tears over the oat mint chip. A family-run shop that actually treats you like family.”
“You can taste that nothing here is fake. The brown butter honey is a religious experience. Six years of ‘Best Scoop in Bend' is no accident.”
Pull up a stool on the patio, grab a pint for the cooler, or just come watch the morning churn through the window.
Walk-ins always welcome. Pints to go, sundaes to stay, and a flavor board that's different every week.
